Brooklyn queer wave band

Show with Hexbane and Lonesome Leash at Acheron

We are super excited to help welcome our recording engineer Don Godwin’s new band Hexbane into the world on January 12th. He’s also an accomplished musician and all-around good guy; we’re also fond of his bandmates and their respective musical abilities. As a bonus, Lonesome Leash is also playing– the insane one-man-band project from Walt McClemons, formerly the bandleader of Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship?, and he somehow manages to play drums, accordion, trumpet and sing at the same time. Must be seen to be believed.

From the organizers:

It’s finally time for the Jam Pony to be released Ya’ll! That’s right: Hexbane!
The moonlit rockers, Kate Ryan, Caroline Paquita, Don Godwin and J.R. Hankins, are ready to reveal their inner workings. Who’d have dreamt this? Kate on drums, Caroline on bass, Don on guitar, J.R. on flugelhorn. Punk Band! Hexbane is here! And they’ll be playing with Lonesome Leash and Gay Panic!
First, Hexbane will invite the moon brains at 8:30 sharp, the witching hour.
Then Walter will release the birds of his one man music box, Lonesome Leash.
Then Gay Panic will bring us on home in the dance freakout of our dreams
All this the Eve of Thursday, January 12th, the Vernal Equinox
The doors will open at 8pm at
The Acheron (57 Waterbury St, Brooklyn)
21 & over
Please come and welcome Hexbane to the night!

Record Release Show January 19th

New album recording documentary!

Some kind words and some other updates…

Hi all:

As you probably know, we weren’t able to play Tiny Tusk‘s CD release party due to an attack of plague on multiple band members. But we all survived and are better now, thank you.

We’re working hard on the album and putting together a teaser video for you as well as trying to get a show here in Brooklyn soon. In the meantime, we came across these kind words by the fine writer and Shady Hawkins frontwoman Suzy X’s blog:

“In recent years, post-punk has returned with a more sullen, shoegazey vengeance than its last manifestation– the pop-infused dance-punk of the mid-2000s. The umbral tones of bands like Savages, Merchandise and A Place To Bury Strangers seem to convey the bitter ennui of a generation addled with an abysmal economy and an increasingly cloudy future. But tucked away in Brooklyn is Gay Panic, a self-described “queer wave” four-piece that combines a dissatisfaction in the present with a shot of hope for better times.

Vocalist Joshua Lerner channels David Byrne vibes with a more controlled, silky finesse, imparting secrets kept in closets, basements and friends’ cars. Guitarist Lior Hadar alternates between shrill, metallic riffs and more soft, lithe harmonies that sway alongside Phil Andrews’ buoyant basslines and Maggie Schreiner’s immaculate disco beat. Much like their post-punk foremothers the Au Pairs or Delta 5, they cleverly slip their social commentary into punchy, electric jams that you just can’t keep still to.

“Get Lost” is a track you can shimmy along to, next to the jukebox at your favorite bar. It might even embolden you to make bedroom eyes at the cutie leaning against the wall in a bedazzled denim vest. But the message is a little more sobering: you can skip town, you can disappear for as long as you’d like– but you can’t shed who you are. And Gay Panic is here to let you know that they’ll love you all the more for it.
